I had the privilege of working for Prof. Maire Mulcahy in my first job. She was a lovely kind lady and I remember her with great fondness. My sincere sympathy to Marianne and family. May she rest in peace. Claire
Our mother was devastated to hear of the death of her great and loyal friend. Maire was a rock for her over the years, and she was admired and loved greatly by her. We have lovely memories of Maire and will always remember her kindness towards us.We were so terribly sorry that we only heard the sad news almost a week after the fact, but wish to now send our deepest condolences to Marianne and family. Anne,Sean,Anne Marie and Thomasina Ryan.
Sincere Sympathy Marianne, your Mum was such a lovely person, and I had the pleasure of working under her for a long time.
Dear Marianne,
I've just read your dear mam Máire's obituary notice in the Sunday Independent.
My sincere sympathy to you and all the family.
I recall Máire being guest speaker at an Inland Fisheries annual dinner many, many years ago & was struck by her elegance & accomplishments.
She was a touchstone for my late dad Patrick Macnamara when any advice was needed on fish health & disease. That advice was always given freely & graciously.
May her gentle soul rest in peace.

Dear Marianne & family, sincere condolences on the death or your wonderful mother Máire. She was so lovely to me and my siblings and always so interested in our progress. This was both as next door neighbours and while a couple of us studied zoology under her tutelage in UCC over 40 years ago. She was great friends with my parents Padraig and Sally and was a great support for them particularly in recent years. She has had a positive influence on so many people and
will be universally missed. It was a pleasure and privilege to have known her. As dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dílis.

Sincere sympathy to all of Máire's family, friends and colleagues. As a 2010 UCC Zoology graduate who received the Máire Mulcahy award I know her career greatly inspired my own. I also remember exchanging a lovely email with Máire after receiving the award. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.
As a student of Maire's from 1966 to 1970 I was impressed by her teaching skills and her erudite approach to education in both theoretical and technical areas. Her influence led me to teaching/lecturing in GMIT till I retired in 1997. I tried to emulate Dr. Maire Mulcahy but there was no one like Maire Mull. Zoological science in Ireland will miss you dearly.
Marianne & family sorry to hear late of you Mum death. She was gentle, strong & & great friend. In the Widows Assoc with my Mum & few others she had life-long friends. Ar dhéis Dé a anam dhílis.
My deepest condolences to Marianne and Dr Mulcahy's extended family on the loss of someone very special. Dr Mulcahy was a neighbour when I was growing up in Bishopstown. Apart from all the well-deserved accolades she received for her academic prowess, I remember her fondly as a lovely lady with no ego and a kind word for every everyone. Ní beidh a leithead ann arís.
My deepest sympathies to Marianne and the Mulcahy, McHenry and McCarthy families on the passing of Máire. I was privileged to have been a student in Zoology in UCC up to 1982 and have Máire as a supervisor and mentor. The many accolades of her academic achievements are well mentioned already. She was a generous and inspiring lady and she often invited the post graduates to her home for social evenings and we had some interesting games of squash in the Maltings. I recently bumped into her in Ringaskiddy and unfortunately we will not now have the planned coffee and catch up. Rest in peace Prof.
I knew Maire at our tennis mornings as a kind, smart and a lovely positive people person. She was a strong group lady and our tennis mornings were always so lively and inclusive. At this sad time I send my sincerest condolences to Maire's family in the sure knowledge that she was a unique and cherished lady.
Sincere sympathy to all the family and relations on the passing of Maura. Unfortunately I could not attend the funeral service as it coincided with the annual get together of the Retired UCC Staff. Maura made a great contribution to the development of marine science and technology in Ireland and particularly in University College Cork. She was always positive about developments and always encouraged younger members of staff when I arrived nearly 50 years ago. Maura was a great supporter of research focussed in Centres in UCC which, after a number of different incarnations, finally culminated in the establishment of the SFI MaREI Centre as well as the construction of the Beaufort Building housing it in Ringaskiddy. Maura was the first Board Chairperson for the newly set up Irish Marine Institute in 1991 and was a driving force in supporting funding for research in this neglected area. This resulted in the impressive Headquarters building located in Rinville, County Galway and the fine Research Vessels we now have including the latest one the RV Tom Crean. Maura was an inspiration to many in the field of Marine Zoology over the years. She was nearly the first woman President of UCC but to the disappointment of many of us, a man was chosen. I met Maura the last time, by chance, in Kilkenny Castle in February 2022 when she was visiting the town for a wedding and she was as bright as ever and was still the Maura we knew over the years. Sadly missed and may she Rest in Peace.
Sincere sympathy to all Prof. Mulcahy's family and friends. She was inspirational as a lecturer of Zoology and instilled in me a great love of Ecology during my years in UCC in the late 70s. May she rest in peace.
Very good and caring friend to my Mother, Anne Ryan. I just heard news yesterday - my sincere condolences.

It was with great sadness I heard of Máire's death. I got to know her while we studied for a Masters degree in Ecology and Religion. She was a gracious, unassuming lady, lovely to travel with in the train and had a great sense of humour. Our many phone conversations were a treat. Sincere sympathy to Marieanne and family. May her gentle soul rest in the arms of God. Miriam
The Irish Science Teachers' Association extends its condolences to the family and friends of Professor Mulcahy. We were honoured to have had Máire serve as our Association's President from 1973 to 1974.

My sincere condolences to Marianne and all Maire's family. It is the end of a long long association. Maire was my lecturer during my Undergraduate years in Zoology in UCC from 1965 to 1969, and started my obsession for salmon biology as a summer student working with her on UDN. She was a constant presence during my PhD and then my first Head of Department when I returned to UCC as a lecturer in Zoology in 1983. She also employed my late wife Mary to work on fish diseases and was very supportive during Mary's terminal illness. I will remember Maire as a friend and colleague, and an excellent zoologist.

To Máire's friends and family my sincere condolences.
I thought I should say a few words, as Máire's passing saddened me so. But most importantly, to celebrate the remarkable person she was.
I met Máire just a few months ago when I joined her Saturday tennis group at Sunday's Well. She was always, without fail, kind and considerate.
As well as her treatment of others, I grew very quickly to admire her wit, her sharpness of mind, her deep knowledge of local history and heritage, and her pro-activeness for causes she cared about.
More than our matches, I looked forward to our tea/coffee after the matches, when I could hear more about this beautiful Island and what she experienced here. And even then she would listen to us with as much enthusiasm as she told her stories.
And in all of that, I never knew of her impressive professional accomplishments until this week, after her passing.
Knowing her was the highlight of my year and I am deeply thankful for that.
We played tennis just 10 days before her passing, and she looked well, content and peaceful.
Just thought I should share. RIP Máire, and well played, my friend.

My deepest condolences to Marianne and all the Mulcahy, McCarthy families. It was with profound sadness that I learned of Professor Mulcahy’s passing. As a Zoology student in the 80s, she touched the lives of countless students, including myself. She was a role model of kindness and compassion, always had an open door and a listening ear, and never failed to go the extra mile for her students. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Deepest sympathy to the Mulcahy Family on the sad passing of Maire

Dear Marianne, so sorry to hear of the passing of your mother, a lady and a scholar. We once shared a memorable week in West Cork doing a field trip at Lough Hyne (you were a young child at the time but behaved very well! ). She was very proud of you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
