Having watched Fr. Johns funeral, it is inspiring to see the contributions he made in his ministry as parish priest, pastor and leader in education, he made to his community over his lifetime. He left his mark on his parish so far away from his Irish home. His family are no doubt so proud of his life’s work. My deepest sympathy to Brenda and the O’Reilly family especially Monica(sister in law) Augustin Mary Breege John and Padraig on Father Johns passing. Though I didn’t know him his name was often mentioned in our house in Tooreen where his brother Patrick was a regular visitor. I can see from the glowing tributes online from his parishioners in Melbourne what a wonderful man he was a great ambassador for his family and the parish of kilgeever. Very sad to learn of Fr. John's passing. He was a visionary man of action who will be greatly missed.
As a young Irish backpacker to Melbourne 25 years ago, he was a great support and even blessed our rust-bucket of a car before myself and two lads from Castlebar headed on the long road journey up to Cairns. In those intervening couple of decades, I had the pleasure of meeting Fr. John every year upon returning to Australia from Ireland to visit my in-laws, and he would always be so interested in what was going on in Mayo and engaged in the politics and affairs of State. He was always keen to know how the Church was getting on back in the old sod. He hosted my late parents Brendan and Ann Geary and my late Uncle Fr. Vincent Kelly when they came out to Oz and he was so kind to my late parents-in law, Arthur and Margaret Moss in Melbourne. My deepest sympathies to all of Fr. John's family including Kitty, Gertrude, Brenda - Monica and Mary O'Reilly and family, Sheila O'Donnell and and the extended O'Reilly Clan. I've no doubt that Fr. John be welcomed with open arms into the eternal light of heaven for all the great work he did in this life +
