Our deepest sympathies to Betty, Frank, Don, Alex, Isabel, Isaac, Janice, Mark, Justin and Adam and the extended Penney and Lynch families. Sonya was an incredibly special person - kind, loving, considerate, an advocate for patients' rights, generous of spirit and a wonderful Mom to Alex, Isabel and Isaac. She hosted the best kids' parties and apparently no one else makes curry sauce as good as hers! She was so generous with her time at the Gaelscoil and helped organise lots of fun events for the children over many years. She will forever have a special place in our hearts and we are privileged to have known her.

Alex, Isabel and Isaac you have always made your Mom so proud of you and you will, without a doubt, achieve your goal of building a paediatric ward in her name in Sri Lanka. It's such a generous thing for you all to do at this time and a fitting tribute to your gorgeous Mom.

May your many special memories of Sonya bring you comfort. xxx

My deepest sympathy to Sonya’s husband, children and extended family. Some months ago I heard a talk she gave online for ARC house and found it so comforting and hopeful.

I was lucky enough to bump into her briefly at a meeting last May for Cancer Research and I’m so glad that I took the opportunity to thank her and tell her how much her presentation had meant to me.

She was clearly a wonderful woman. May she rest in peace.

I just saw on the Echo that a paediatric ward will be built in honour of Sonya such a fitting tribute. Such a lovely friendly kind person.We worked together in Drogheda while we were training ,we were both from Cork at the time . I bumped into her again back in 2015 and we had a lovely chat that day after all the years. I was so saddened to hear she has passed away . I am so sorry for your loss , may her gentle soul rest in peace .

I would often have seen her walking home with her children, to whom she was utterly devoted. My thoughts are with both Lynch and Penney families, especially with her sister, Jan. There are no truer words than your own, that Sonya was beautiful both inside and out, and that she lit up the lives of those close to her. We had the absolute privilege of experiencing that and Sonya was a wonderful friend and advocate to Cork ARC for many years. When she spoke, her realness inspired others and she tirelessly and selflessly spoke up not only for the greater good of cancer patients, but also for their families, which allowed many to see what really makes a difference in their lives. We cannot thank her enough for her generosity and insight.
Sonya, you will be hugely missed but your wisdom will live on. May you rest in peace

I’m writing this tonight after Sonya’s funeral ceremony ., a ceremony I will never forget that she wrote her own eulogy. Such a wonderful person .. loved everyone but loved by all who knew her as seen by the massive congregation today .
Worked alongside her for years on St Anne’s , a breath of fresh air … home baking was a great trait of hers … heartbroken for you all . I hope you find refuge in the wonderful years ye had together. Sending love and hugs . Sandra ( st Anne’s )
