I had Sr Berchmans for English for Leaving Cert and I loved every class with her. She was a breath of fresh air so young and vibrant and of course now I see she was only 20 years older than us. We did Macbeth for 1970 Leaving Cert and I still have my school copy

Our daughters went to the Mercy Schools in Waterford and I had the pleasure of meeting Sr Berchmans (Margaret) some years ago when she came to visit the school council and the the board of the school when I was a member
You can imagine how surprised and delighted we both were to meet again

I still remember the sense of order and learning Sr Berchmans created in our first year English class, (1967-68), while as a newly appointed Principal in that same academic year, she managed the enormous transition to free 2nd level education for all.

Deepest Sympathies to the Family of Sr. Margaret and to her Family in Religion, the Mercy Sisters. I've known her since my schooldays in St Mary's and while she wasn't my teacher for any significant period, I've continued to know her and our paths to cross all through my adult life, too. Sr Margaret always showed such an interest in me and in everyone she would meet.
Now, on her departure, i have stopped to think of all we received in terms of our education and all that we got through our schooldays, courtesy of the Mercy Sisters partnering with our Parish and how life might have been very much impoverished for us without it. I dont know that I have ever reflected long on it before.
I want to thank you, Sr Margaret, for your kindness, your genuine interest, hard work and sacrafice over the years which was all for the wellbeing and education of the students of St Mary's, Mallow.
May you now Rest in Eternal Peace and Joy.

I remember Sr. Berchmans as a role- model for young girls: a strong, capable woman with a keen intellect. As many have already stated, she was a wonderful teacher. She inspired and challenged her students to embrace a wider perspective on life, to develop a love of language and a curiosity about other cultures. She had a positive influence on many of our career and life choices and we are so much the richer for that experience.

On a June evening in the early seventies Sr Berchmans offered me a job in St Marys.My singular memory of the brief encounter was the praise she lavished on the then fledgling lay staff and sisters that formed her team.One of the strengths of this competent principal was her deep appreciation of and respect for the unique gifts that each teacher brought to the profession...A woman of intellect and noble bearing, she often referred to her students as "interesting ", sometimes quoting a line from an English essay. Deeply caring...I am reminded of some lines from a beautiful piece of writing she sent over 30 years ago when my father died. It seems fitting to return the grace...Sr. Berchmans "was like the desert elders of christianity who taught more by example than by words....It was their gentleness,their heartbreaking courtesy that was the seal of their sanctity". Deepest condolences to the Sisters of Mercy and the O'Brien family.
