Thomas Hennessy

Tommy the Tank. Larger than Life character. Respected and Feared in equal measure. I remember bumping into him and his beautiful family in Youghal over 25 years ago when I was just a young scrot fresh into the 4th Battalion. I was surprised how he took the time to chat me, and got a feeling I was part of something much bigger than myself. Such a big personality he seemed to be a permanent part of the Barracks. I would easily say anyone who served in Collins Barracks during Tommy’s time will have known who he was. Cheerful, hardworking, not a person you would want to cross, everything you would have wanted in a Soldier. Like so many others who have served in the Defence Forces he chose a vocation to protect others. It is with great sadness that I have processed the news of your passing. I’m sure you have joined Ronnie Constant, Dave Ambrose, Aidan Holly and the rest of those from the 4th Battalion who were taken too soon. I write this whilst waiting at the airport for another Brother from B Company to arrive and catch up on the old days. We will have a drink for you Tommy.

Absolute gent, spent time with Tommy overseas in chad, one of the nicest person’s I ever met and was some crack to be around. When overseas you always have a couple of bad days and when I did went up to Tommy and all was good again. Just lighten up your day with some funny stories.
