Thomas (Tom) Bourke

Sincere sympathy to the Bourke family on the passing of Tom. I got to know Tom while working for Galway City Council about ten years ago and once I told him I was a Bourke from Mayo we really hit it off. I called to Tom and your mother many times while I worked in Galway and they were such fun and interesting people. Your mother used to call me Dermot Bannon. He had such a knowledge of Mayo history and his garden was an absolute credit to him. I sampled many of his fine vegetables. He was very helpful to my father, Sean, and the people of Partry when they arranged a "Gentleman Jim Corbett" commemoration a few years ago and his presence at the event was much appreciated. RIP Tom.

A great neighbour and an even greater friend.
A man who regularly said" Life is for living" and lived every day by that rule.
He lived life to the full and never wasted a moment, whether at work, at home, in the garden, writing to newspaper editors, supporting Mayo, going racing or enjoying a pint with his many friends.
A true gentleman who was full of kindness, generosity, intelligence, wisdom, charm, history and was really good fun to be with.
A "man's man" who was blessed with an abundance of natural charm and who really knew how to pay a compliment when the occasion was right.
A truly unique and wonderful gentleman. They broke the mould the day Tom Bourke was born

Deeply saddened to hear of Tom's passing. I spent many great summers and Sundays working along side him in Mervue, the stories I could tell!!! He taught me many things about work and life. A great character who lived life to the full always. RIP Tom.

To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.

I think the Emerson poem sums Tom Bourke up. As a child going to Galway shopping was a bore, but if we had time to drop of at uncle Toms shop, it made the day. It’s not common for young kids to ask to go and see older relatives ( in a chemist shop😁). But, there was always a welcoming theatrical reception, a booming melodiously voice, tall tales filled with nods and winks and a mischievous smile.
It was always a fan fare and a delight when he would drop in to Cornmarket. He naturally commanded a presence and filled the air with hilarity and joy. To those who knew him of all ages, he left a positive imprint.

My mother idolised him as did I.

So very sorry to learn of Toms passing, I called to Toms Pharmacy for many years with Johnson Brothers, both Tom and his staff were a delight, a lovely gentleman, great craic, May Tom rest well ♥️

So sorry to hear of Tom's passing. Our deepest condolences to al the Bourke Family, he was such a wise gentleman with a good word for everyone and expert advice to go with. His tonics were magic as were the cough bottles. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

We were delighted to be able to attend uncle Tom's service to bid him a fond and fitting farewell, a one of a kind and special person we all so dearly loved and admired, Tom played such a big and caring part in our family for decades, we will miss him so much, may he rest in peace.

I recall a gentleman and an excellent veterinary chemist. My late father sought the advice of Tom on a delicate young mare in the late eighties. He produced a poultice for recurring sores and also a gallon of tonic to be given in with the oats. To this day I have wondered what was in the tonic as she went on to produce some excellent offspring for us over the years.
