I was lucky to have stayed with the McGovern family in 83/84 while in AnCO
Cabra. Tommy and his family went above and beyond to make my fellow Students ( Michael and James) and myself welcome. He used to bring us swimming in Aer Lingus and even organised a day trip to the Isle of Man with a pilot friend of his on a small plane. What a wonderful day we had.
I dropped by years later to Ratoath to say hello but unfortunately the family had moved by then.

May he rest in peace.

Condolences To the McGovern family. As an ANCO trainee in the early 80’s, I had the pleasure of staying with the McGoverns in Cabra.

It was with great sadness we heard of the passing of Tommy. Many years ago we went to Spain with Tommy & Mary and we laughted from the time we arrived till leaving. Our sincere condolances to Mary and Family. He will be remembered with much love and affection by all who
had the pleasure of knowing him.

Sincere condolences to the McGovern family. Tommy holds a fond place in the memories of many Aer Lingus apprentices of the 80’s, we travelled around America and Europe with his football teams, and still talk of the trips when we meet, great memories, thanks Tommy.

So sorry to hear that uncle Tommy has died. I remember his sense of fun and hearty laugh, when visiting Nana Doyle’s house. Parkinsons is such a cruel disease. I’m sorry it affected his life for so long. Sleep well now Tommy you deserve the rest

My sincere condolences to Tommy’s family and his many friends and associates on the very sad news of his passing. Tommy was larger than life and a true character in every sense of the word. I first encountered him while watching him referee a match in the Bogies in Cabra West back in the 60’s where he officiated over a local schoolboy derby. What could have been a fractious affair passed off without incident due to his excellent refereeing skills. It was a mixture of his strict disciple and an injection of his wit and humour along the way. As someone has already mentioned Tommy was part a group of referees who became known as the “Magnificent 7” in the 60’s and 70’s. This included other notable referees at the time such as Paddy Daly and John Carpenter. The group set newer and higher standards in League of Ireland refereeing propelling them onto the international stage with games in European competitions. It was my good fortune to eventually get to know Tommy in person when I subsequently met him and became friends during my time working at Dublin Airport. As you would expect he was a highly respected member of the team at Aer Lingus and he brought with him his passion for football. For many years up to his retirement he took the young apprentices in the hangars under his wing organising training sessions, matches and overseas trips to tournaments around the world. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by us all. May he rest in peace.

My sincere sympathy to Mary & family on the sad passing of Tommy. He was a gentleman & I loved the banter with him over many years. The stories from his LOI & International refereeing days were both hilarious, priceless & noteworthy. Such as his train trips from Dublin to Sligo to referee in the Showgrounds, and how after a Sligo defeat, the Rovers fans would very kindly & promptly 'escort' him back to the train station. One of our 'Magnificent 7' referees in the 60's & 70's. Much respected, personable & kind. It's not the final whistle Tommy, perhaps extra time, may you rest in peace.
