Tom Fitzsimons

On the day we were told that the cancer had spread to your liver – you picked up your phone and read a paragraph to me from the book ‘Dictator’. You had photographed this the previous afternoon, while waiting in A&E. For context - the philosopher Cicero has fled to the deserted island of Astura and this is where he contemplated the soul – it goes as follows:
What is the soul? He asked in his Consolation.
It is not moist, or airy, or fiery, or compounded of the earth.
There is nothing in these elements that accounts for the power of memory, mind or thought, that recalls the past, foresees the future, or comprehends the present.
Rather the soul must be counted as a fifth element – divine and therefore eternal.
 
This was your divine message to me - at that time I could not fully take this in but now I treasure this eternal message you left with me.
 
Tom – your passing has left an immense void in our lives that can never be filled. You were the very best husband and father but most of all - you were my best friend and my ‘raisin d’être’. It was your time to go but was still too soon.

Your work here is done. Let your very pure, beautiful, divine and eternal Soul rest now – love of my life, I will carry you forever in my heart – until we meet again, Olive

We are heartbroken and devastated at your leaving us too soon. You brought so much happiness and fun into our lives. You entertained us with your wit and stories, brightening up our day. You were always so knowledgeable and we had many enjoyable discussions. We will miss you so much and the love and care you shared with us all. You were a bright light in all our lives. Tom, you will always be with us in our hearts and minds and will forever be so dearly missed.

I have so many happy memories of you. Not only were you such a fun uncle who always lit up our day, but you were also a great friend and always encouraging us to make the most of life. Our lives are incredibly richer having been able to spend time with and feel the love that you, Olive and Robert give so freely. Whilst we will miss your smile, the craic and the joy you brought to ever occasion, we will forever love you and carry your spirit in our hearts.

Sincere and genuine condolences on his passing. Only received this terrible news today, Wednesday 2nd July. Had the pleasure of working with Tom on a few jobs over the years. However, I shall be forever grateful to him for sourcing a few hanks of Cod’s Roe, every Spring, when no one else could supply.

So sorry to hear of Tommy’s passing. I last saw him out in Howth and he was cracking jokes and making the whole place laugh.

Rest in peace, Tom. A great uncle and a true gent. I was at your funeral yesterday. It was a perfectly fitting tribute to a tremendous person. Robbie gave a really good reading, Stephen, Darragh and Warick played brilliant songs picked by Olive, and of course Olive herself gave a really strong eulogy. The Church was packed with people, testament to the fact that you touched so many lives.

I am among those many, so I want to thank you. Thank you for so many interesting chats, for so many delicious home cooked meals, so many great nights out in Howth and Raheny, for the care you've shown my father, my brothers and I, and for the words of comfort you gave me at my own mother's funeral that I will never forget.

Kwanele sends her love too, and her sadness that, after hearing so many stories about nights out with the cool uncle, you didn't get to meet.

Your life was cut short too soon, but it was a full life for its years that brought so many smiles to so many. I know you're up there with Conor now, and you're so proud of Robert and Olive.

Sincere condolences to the family of Tommy and remembering Orla at this time. It is difficult to put into words, we just remember Tommy when we lived in Ennafort and all his friends, what a lovely bunch. May he rest in peace in the arms of Jesus.

Tom, the finest storyteller I’ve ever met, an entertainer by nature. But also the most genuine and positive person, offering inspiring words of advice when most needed. Always up for a laugh and always resilient. I will miss you Tommy.

So very sad to be writing this tribute to Tom on this, the saddest day of Olive and Robert's lives. Tom lived, loved and was loved.
He was always so full of life and fun. A joy to be round, always a centre of attention and laughter, everyone's favourite uncle, a great friend, a really decent man. Someone who knew all too well the fragile nature of life but, instead of bemoaning this, turned it into a positive force for good. He lived it to the full. Nobody could remain sad for long in Tom and Olive's company.
Olive was the love of his life and the centre of his world. They were made for each other, completely happy only in each other's presence and this was obvious to all. When Robert came along their happiness was complete. Tom and Robert were not just father and son but best friends. There followed a life packed with holidays, Dubs and Arsenal matches, friends and family and always such joy!
And he was loved by all- by Olive and Robert who nursed him through his illness and fulfilled his final wish of returning to their beautiful home, by his family who so beautifully and so movingly bid him farewell in his final hours, and by his heartbroken extended family, friends, acquaintances and customers to whom he was always so decent .
He lived, loved and was so loved by all. In the end there can be no more than this.
Goodbye Tom, how you will be missed! You leave this life and us so much better for knowing you. We all look forward to meeting you in the next one.

Tom there are so many ways to tell you how privileged we were to know you. Your sense of humour, your positivity, your passion for the gunners and the Dubs- but the thing that stands out more than anything was your unconditional love for Olive and Rob. Tom was one of life’s rare gems—always happy, smiling, and full of fun. He saw the best in everyone. We will remember him with love and treasure the years of memories we shared together: gathering at special occasions to enjoy the wonderful food he prepared for us, fun times on holiday splashing in the pool, and celebrating with “Dora the Explorer” birthday cake alongside the kids. Such wonderful, happy memories.
