Velta Conneely
(née Riekstins)

Condolences to Jimmy & Helen & to all Velta's children; Paul, Irene, Rory, Fiona, Didi, Maeve, Noel and Emma. I have known Velta since I was a baby of 4 months & she was living in the vicarage at Christchurch Clifden with her parents Helmuts & Lilias Riekstins where Lilias's father the Rector allowed my parents to park their furniture waggon summer home in the rectory gardens. Velta, Helen, I & my brothers played together & enjoyed each other's company almost every summer. Velta, being older than me, was always a great example and inspiration to me; her love and knowledge of the flower names in Connemara; her positive outlook on life; her experiences at school & the kind nuns at Kylemore Abbey; her meeting & love of Jimmy & their setting up home together in Belleek with no running water; her interest in growing vegetables in Polly tunnels; and then the eight children that she & Jimmy brought up & the wonderful loving family they created. She always said I was like family to her even though we had no family connection - just life time friends. We last enjoyed each other's company in May this year when I was at Ballydoolough & able to come over & see her, Jimmy and some of the family. We both enjoyed catching up and spending time talking and sharing together. She was, as always, so brave in coping with her illness in this world & has now departed for the next - she will be missed by so many especially Jimmy & her family. But she & her inspirational life will never be forgotten.

I was so very sorry to hear of Velta's passing. I have fond memories of her from working in Abbeyglen years ago, where we had many a lively chat in the staff tearoom. She was always cheerful and kind to everyone. Thinking of you all at this difficult time.

We first met Velta when she visited our aunt Irmgard in Austria. Later on we visited Velta in Clifden and enjoyed her and Jimmies hospitality.

Jimmy, Irene, Fiona, Noel, Rory, Paul, Maeve, Didi, Emma, Helen, the kids - my heart is with ye all in this sad time. I only wish the rest of me was there with it. My love to everyone til I get to see ye again.

Your wife, your mam, your sister, was a special person. Between Jimmy, Velta and my Dad is it any wonder I love my garden so much, the flowers, the birds, the insects - how well they all work together when we let them do their thing. Such a merry dance. When I am sad some time spent in my garden lifts my spirits.

I know that Velta loved hers too. She walked me around the garden up at the house maybe two years ago now, showing me all the flowers and plants, each with a little story.

When I look at my garden, I will think of Velta in hers. I think that is where we will find her now. In the garden.
