I only got to know Bill, since retirement, but when I met up with him, and Brian, both were inseparable, and wonderful entertaining company. Bill will be much missed. Very sad to hear of the passing of the noblest of men. I served as the 'jailer ' on Sgt Bill Herlihy's unit in Store St in the 1960's. Altho' not a Station Sergt (a near defunct grade at that time) Bill was the Public Office Sergeant and simply stated he was just a model supervisor and Force member. He was respectful, responsible, knowledgeable and the first to lend a hand when situations required a robust response as they very frequently do for Gardai. Yet, he was hugely intelligent and personable, two skills that tend to serve the Gardai at testing times. Sincerest condolences to all in Bill's family, I have no doubt that they feel a light has been extinguished in their lives. Rest in Peace, Bill, you left a great legacy.
