Mary O'Sullivan
(née Downing)

On March 15th, 2025, Mary passed away peacefully following a long period of illness, surrounded by her loving relatives at the Bon Secours Hospital, Cork City. Her passing closely follows that of her beloved husband James (Jimmy) O’Sullivan in November of 2024.

She will be dearly missed by her sons Colm and Alan, her sister and best friend Celine, brother Anthony and his wife Pat, grandson Simon, daughter-in-law Caroline, son-in-law Tim, close friend Martina O’Sullivan and her daughter Pauline, along with her brother-in-law Rohan, husband of her deceased sister Teresa. The family would also like to extend their deepest gratitude to Kay Lynch for her diligence and friendship over the past year in helping to care for both Mary and Jimmy in the final stages of their illnesses.

Originally from Castle Road, Bandon, Mary worked as a telephonist before meeting Jimmy and settling in Bantry as a wife and mother. She was well-known in the town for her wit and humour, especially in the face of over two decades of severe ill-health. A host of friends and neighbours from Bantry and Bandon will remember her kindly.

Reposing at Coakley Funeral Home, Chapel Street, Bantry on Tuesday March 18th from 7pm to 8.30pm.

A service will take place at The Island Crematorium, Ringaskiddy, at 4pm on Wednesday March 19th and those who wish to join are invited to attend.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors and nurses of the Bon Secours Hospital for their care and attention. In lieu of flowers, they would appreciate if any donations could be made to Arthritis Ireland.
