How Walking in Remembrance Helps Us Heal

How Walking in Remembrance Helps Us Heal

Throughout March, RIP.ie Remembers has demonstrated something amazing and meaningful. Walking together gives us a steady way to remember our loved ones while carrying the grief we feel.

By taking part in RIP.ie Remembers this March, you are not only honouring someone special but also becoming part of a community-led effort that provides a space to connect and support one another.

How does walking aid the grieving process?

Walking naturally boosts mood. As we move, the body releases chemicals that reduce stress and support mental well-being. Even brief, regular walks can provide benefits. They can calm a busy mind, lift energy and support better sleep.

Being outside can make you feel more at ease. Daylight and nature are associated with a greater sense of calmness. People may find that the trees, sky, and fresh air make it easier to slow their breathing and feel grounded.

Grief has no timeline. It’s best to take it one small step at a time. A gentle way to begin is a five-to-ten-minute walk, which can then be built up when ready.

Allow thoughts, don’t force insight. Walking is not about solving problems. Let thoughts come and go. Clarity often arrives after the walk. - John Boland from Get Ireland Walking

Walking together

Grief can be an incredibly isolating experience; that’s why many people find solace and comfort in walking with others. One meaningful part of the Remembrance Walk is knowing you are not alone, even if you walk at a different time or in a different place. The opportunity for social connection can be a huge support to those processing grief.

The action of walking side by side, rather than being face to face, removes some of the social pressure and makes it easier to freely express emotions. The simple movement creates space for reflection and mindfulness, helping us be more present with the memory of our loved ones.

Group activity can also help those who prefer structure. Community or memorial walks provide an organised plan, a set date and time, and supportive company. Organisations like St. Francis Hospice acknowledge that moving in a group can help with feeling more understood and less alone.

Every step has meaning. Every walk tells a story.

If you have joined us throughout this month, thank you for every step and every euro raised. If you would like to share your walk, a photo, a short clip, or a message can help someone else feel less alone. Tag RIP.ie on Instagram or Facebook and use our hashtag #RIPRemebers so we can find it. And if you have not joined yet, there is still time to take part in the last few days of March. You can register on our website and walk in your own time, at your own pace, in a way that feels right for you.
